Rug Placement Ideas

Choosing the correct rug for your home

Different rooms require different size and types of rugs. How you place your rug and the size can really make or break your interior design and what you are trying to achieve. A simple way to update your home giving it warmth and personality. Choose one that complements your design, echoing the colours you have used in the room.

Dining Room Rug Tips - Round or Rectangle rugs.

Always measure your space and your furniture before considering your rug size. Too small and your furniture may get caught up with the rug! Pick a flat weave or short-pile rug as they are a practical choice in the dining room.

Buy a rug that will fit under both chairs and table. Don’t have a rug too small for the space but equally make sure you have at least 30cm between the rug and wall or piece of furniture like a sideboard. Make sure that the rug is still under your chairs even when pulled out. Think of it as an island for your furniture!

Match the rug shape to the table shape. If you have a round dining table use a round rug. Rectangular rugs work best with Rectangular and oval dining tables. Square dining tables work best with square rugs.

Living Room Rug Tips

The bigger, the better! This does normally mean more expensive but if you go too small in your living room, you risk the “island effect” where the rug is floating like an island in the middle of your room and furniture. It will be much more effective if you go bigger, pulling your design together.

If you have the room, put your rug underneath all the furniture, sofa, chairs and coffee table (see above pics). If your living space is smaller make sure the rug is at least under your sofa and armchairs legs. Leave rug space either side of your sofa to allow the design to breathe. Layering up rugs can be a good idea if you don’t have the budget for one big rug.

Bedroom Rug Tips

For King size beds, use a rug that has at least 30cm extra from the end of the bed. 15cm for double beds. If you don’t have the room or a large rug is too expensive get two rugs for either side of the bed. For two single beds the rug can lie between them with at least 5-10 cm away from the edge of the bed.
